The SAAVT strives to establish a sense of pride in the occupation with all its members. The association is further involved in the compiling of the study curriculum of the training course and see to it that the content stays up to date with advances in the field. An annual congress is also arranged where members present scientific papers on research and present posters. All papers presented is compiled into a Technical Journal.

Veterinary technologists play an important role in the maintenance of animal health and productivity in South Africa. Their tasks consists; firstly, of diagnostic work to determine the cause of sickness or death of animals. Secondly, they are involved in technical and field studies in research, working with a professional team of researchers. Veterinary technologists are also employed in quality control of veterinary products and the production of biological products such as antigens for diagnostic tests and vaccines for the prevention of disease. Al of these duties are performed keeping their ethical code in mind.
